FAQ
Security Lights & Flood Lights FAQs
What is the difference between a motion sensor and a dusk-to-dawn security light?
A motion sensor security light activates only when it detects movement within its detection range — conserving energy by staying off when no motion is present. A dusk-to-dawn light uses a built-in photocell to turn on automatically at nightfall and off at sunrise, providing continuous overnight illumination. Many Feit Electric security lights combine both sensors, so the light stays on all night and brightens further when motion is detected.
How far can a motion sensor security light detect movement?
Motion detection range varies by model. Feit Electric security lights detect movement up to 60 feet away with 180° coverage, making them suitable for driveways, yards, and building perimeters. Detection sensitivity and timer duration — from 1 to 10 minutes after motion stops — are adjustable on most models.
Are LED security lights better than traditional halogen flood lights?
LED security lights use up to 80% less energy than conventional halogen flood lights and last significantly longer — Feit Electric LED security lights are rated for 50,000 hours with no bulbs to replace. They also turn on instantly to full brightness, unlike some older technologies that require warm-up time. The estimated annual energy cost of a Feit Electric dusk-to-dawn security light is as low as $3.37.
Can I use a security flood light without hardwiring it?
Yes. Feit Electric offers solar-powered security lights that require no hardwiring or electrical connection — they charge during the day and activate automatically at dusk or when motion is detected. Solar models are ideal for locations without easy access to an electrical outlet, such as detached garages, sheds, fences, and garden paths.
Are Feit Electric security lights weatherproof?
Yes. All Feit Electric outdoor security lights carry a wet location rating, meaning they are suitable for direct exposure to rain, snow, and outdoor elements. They can be mounted on exterior walls, under eaves, on soffits, and in open-air locations including uncovered decks, patios, and walkways. The housing is weather and rust resistant for long-term outdoor installation.
